Document Authentication Help

Understand the process before submitting your documents.

Documents Commonly Used Abroad

Different document types may require different preparation.

Examples of documents that may be submitted for apostille or authentication include:

  • Birth, death and marriage records
  • Notarized powers of attorney
  • Academic transcripts and diplomas
  • Business and corporate documents
  • Court or probate documents
  • Other eligible Connecticut public documents

Eligibility depends on who issued or signed the document and whether it meets Connecticut authentication requirements.

Connecticut Process

The issuing authority matters.

Connecticut generally authenticates documents signed by qualifying Connecticut public officials, including Connecticut notaries and certain state or local officials.

Federal documents and documents issued in another state normally must be handled by the appropriate federal authority or issuing state instead.

Current Connecticut Process

Connecticut now uses an online apostille application system.

Connecticut also issues e-Apostilles for eligible documents. Certain records, including vital records, are not currently eligible for an e-Apostille and still require the paper process.
